planning to get a handset from US and take it India. will it work there?

Most USA phones won't work overseas, but some will. You need to make sure you get a GSM phone (the kind with a SIM card) and make sure it supports the GSM bands/frequencies used in India (not all GSM phones do). I believe the two main cell phone companies in the USA that have GSM phones that work overseas are AT&T and T-Mobile, so you may want to start there.

Many tri and quad band phones work here. Best to get an unlocked phone so you can use local SIM cards or the charges will be steep. THat's what my US colleagues did. I've seen them use Motorolla Razors, the Iphone and various blackberries
