I use a SIM Card there, so i need to get a phone suitable to that. Also, what does it mean by unlocked? Is that the one i need to carry? Sound advise definitely appreciated! Thanks.

Check out the Global Blackberry 8830! They are red or silver if you have verizon and they take a sim card, i'm pretty sure most carriers have a version of this phone.

Unlocked means that it can use a SIM card from any mobile phone company in the world. Trinidad's bmobile, UK's O2. USA's AT&T. etc. Most GSM phones can be unlocked. Though this depends on the phone. So whatever phone you get in the States, as long as its unlocked should work in India.

All american phones work here in India All Indian mobiles also work in US. Just check with your service provider if they are providing romaing in INdia. As far as technology is concerned. GSM or CDMA both works here.
